Project: Heritage reuse of San Pedro Cultural

Location: Becerril de Campos (Spain)

Architecture: Álvaro Gutiérrez Baños, Carlos del Olmo, Juan del Olmo

Light as narrative.

San Pedro Cultural puts forward a contemporary reading of the reuse of a heritage site. The former church has been turned into a space devoted to astronomy and scientific outreach, where the age-old architecture acts as a prop for a renewed experience.

The project transforms one of the former churches of the complex—most of which has either disappeared or been repurposed—into a framework for a wide range of humanistic and technical uses. What had been in place remains recognisable, whilst the light content and technology have added another layer of meaning.

In this immersive experience, the emergency lighting is not fitted as just an added technical requirement, but as part of the experience as a whole.

The design revolves around the vault, understood to represent the sky. Inside, the lighting portrays the star system using CLAVO luminaires to create an immersive experience that conveys the heavens in an architectural space.
